John 20:20
In John 20:20 the King James Version records an amazing understatement.
“Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord.”
I guess so! They were not only glad, they were ecstatic. They were overjoyed.
“Lo, in the grave he lay, Jesus, my Savior,
But He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord.”
Christ beat the Enemy at his own game! Death had been swallowed up in victory!
Yes, these disciples were absolutely astounded. The agony of defeat had become the thrill of victory. So they worshipped as mourning was changed into gladness and weeping into joy. As one Christian wrote:
Christ is alive, Alive, Alive can that really be true?
Living as I myself am? I got up and walked about repeating,
“Christ is living! Christ is living! It seemed strange and hardly true,
but at last it came upon me as a burst of sudden glory.”
Let’s be overjoyed—He’s alive!
